How the pricing works
The encounter is sold as a block — $400 covers a group of four, and each extra person is $75. There is no single-person rate. For four people that is $100 each, which is at the top end of this directory; for a group of eight it comes down to about $84 a head.
The offsetting fact is that Cape May County Park & Zoo is free to enter. You are not stacking an encounter fee on top of an admission fee, which is how most of the US venues here are structured.
What you get
Twenty to thirty minutes inside the exhibit with a zoo educator, bringing bamboo treats to the capybaras. The residents are Buttercup, Marigold, their mother and an older sister called Capychino, which is the best name in this entire directory and we will not be taking questions.
It is a real in-exhibit encounter rather than a fence-line feeding, which is part of what the price is buying.

Forty-eight thousand followers for a free county zoo, which is its own kind of endorsement. Buttercup and Marigold turn up often enough to be worth following in season.
The encounter runs roughly April to October and depends on the weather. Outside that window the zoo is still open and free, but the capybara encounter is not on offer.
Zoo hours run 10:00 to 16:30 through the March-to-October season. Book through the Cape May County site rather than at the gate.
