The confusion has a specific source. In 2023 a Vancouver BC food site published a story announcing "North America's first capybara cafe" opening downtown, called Capy B Cafe. It was an April Fool's joke, complete with a fake address that mixed Tokyo and Vancouver. It is still circulating as fact. There is no capybara cafe in Vancouver BC.
What SOFTEA is
Boba and soft serve, mixed together and separately, in a capybara-themed room with board games and cosy seating, plus capybara merchandise. It opened in 2024 and has settled into being a proper neighbourhood hangout rather than a novelty stop.
No live animals. Nobody here has claimed otherwise — the confusion is entirely downstream of that joke article.
