What's actually in it
Grumpy Capy publishes in a few different modes — guides, quizzes, small tools, and the occasional piece of news that survived a fact-check. The newsletter is the digest version of all of it, written in the same register as the site. If the dry, mildly annoyed thing isn't for you, the list won't be either.
What lands in your inbox
- New field-guide explainers, batched rather than dripped one at a time
- Guides worth the click — care, cost, legality, behaviour
- The news that was actually confirmed, not just posted
- New quizzes and tools when they ship
- The occasional aside that doesn't fit anywhere else on the site
What doesn't
- Daily sends
- Sponsored placements dressed up as editorial picks
- Countdown timers, "last chance", or any other manufactured deadline
- Your email address, sold or rented to anybody
How often it goes out
There's no fixed schedule, and we're not going to invent one. The site itself publishes close to daily; the newsletter doesn't try to keep up with that. It goes out when a batch has built up into something worth reading in one sitting. Quiet stretches happen and they're deliberate — a send with nothing in it is worse than no send.
Practically: expect it in batches, expect gaps, and don't read a gap as a problem.
Where product picks fit
Some issues include Amazon or Etsy picks, the same ones that show up on the shop archives. Those links are affiliate links — if you buy something after clicking one, Grumpy Capy may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Nobody pays to be included. There's no rate card, and no brand has ever bought a slot in a send. Picks get in because they fit the tone and are actually useful, and they come out again when they stop being either. The full version of how the site is funded is on the about page.
What happens to your email address
It goes into our own database — Postgres, hosted on Supabase — along with which page you signed up from and your IP address. The IP is there for rate limiting and spam, not profiling. That's the whole record. It isn't passed to a data broker, appended against other lists, or used to build an advertising audience.
Every email carries an unsubscribe link, and it works immediately. If you'd rather have the record deleted outright rather than just marked unsubscribed, ask via the contact page and we'll delete it. The full detail is in the privacy policy.
Not sure yet? Read something first
Reasonable. The list is the same voice as the site, so the fastest way to decide is to read a bit of it:
- The guides archive — the researched end of the site, where the legality and care pages live.
- The quizzes — the least serious end, and the most screenshotted.
- The tools — a capybara age calculator and a name generator, both running entirely in your browser.
- About — who runs this, how sources get checked, and how AI imagery is used and labelled.
