Santa Barbara Zoo Euthanizes Capybara Poppy After Inoperable Throat Mass

Poppy, an 8-year-old female capybara at the Santa Barbara Zoo in California, was euthanized on 15 August 2026 after specialist veterinarians found a mass in her throat too extensive to remove. The zoo's only other capybara, Antonio, 4, is simultaneously undergoing chemotherapy for a rare blood cancer.
