PLAN A CAPYBARA DAY. WE'LL TELL YOU WHY YOU'RE NOT REPLYING TO TEXTS.

Seven choices. Four eras. One uncomfortably accurate verdict about where you currently are in life.

Capybaras have figured out the soft life. They sit. They soak. They allow ducks. We've taken the same logic and applied it to the only question that matters: which era are you currently in.

The verdicts

  • Soft Launch Era — You are not announcing anything. You are easing in. Forty seconds at a time. The bath is testing the water and the water is also testing the bath. You're not committing to a vibe, a person, a hobby, or a meal plan — you're just letting things happen at the lowest possible volume. This is healthy. Continue.
  • Silent Treatment Era — You have stopped explaining yourself. The group chat is muted. The voicemail is full. You're not angry — you're just out of words for people who didn't earn them. Someone will eventually notice you've gone quiet, and you'll consider whether they're worth the door opening again. This is a powerful era and slightly scary to be around.
  • Main Character (No Plot) Era — You are walking somewhere with a coffee and there is no destination. Your fits are immaculate. You have eaten at three restaurants this week alone, on purpose. You don't actually have a project — you have a vibe. The story is the soundtrack. There is no second act and that's fine. The bit is the bit.
  • Everything Is Fine Era — You have a routine. You have powders. You have a notebook with a gratitude page. You also have a small persistent feeling that something is off, but the routine is supposed to fix that, and you have a routine, so it's fine. Capybaras at hot springs look like this — outwardly serene, inwardly being climbed on by a duck.

FAQ

What does a capybara actually do all day?
Graze, rest, and get in the water. They feed heavily in the cooler parts of the day, spend the hottest hours in or beside water, and rest in contact with the rest of the herd. The grazing is not leisurely — an adult puts away a serious volume of grass to run on it.
Are capybaras nocturnal?
Mostly crepuscular — busiest around dawn and dusk. Where they are disturbed or hunted they shift more of their activity into the night, which is a stress response rather than a preference.
Is the soft life thing a real capybara trait?
No. It is a projection, and a very popular one. A wild capybara is a prey animal that stays near water because water is an exit, not because it is relaxing.

Are Capybaras Legal in Quebec? The Only Province That Names the Animal

Every other province in Canada answers this by omission. Quebec put Hydrochoerus in a schedule by genus, marked it as requiring a permit, and marked the cavies a few rows above it as needing none. It is the clearest provincial answer in the country, and it is a qualified yes.

Capybara Gifts for People Who Are Calmly Obsessed

A good capybara gift should feel specific, useful, and a little unwell in the right direction. The weak version is random brown plush. The better version knows the fan, the joke, and the animal.

Are Capybaras Legal in British Columbia? The Alien Species List Has No Rodents At All

BC built a controlled alien species regime after a tiger attack, aimed it at animals that can hurt people, and never put a single rodent on it. That leaves the capybara outside the province's main exotic-animal law and inside a municipal patchwork with no shared template. Surrey prohibits it outright. Victoria has no species list at all. Vancouver, remarkably, appears not to prohibit it.
